Pope Francis has met with Stella Assange, the wife of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, Stella Assange told The Associated Press. Stella Assange, née Sara González Devant, is a lawyer and human rights defender known as Sara Devant before changing her name.

Pope Francis met with Stella Assange on Friday, June 30th, 2023. Stella Assange said the pope's gesture in receiving her was a sign of support for her husband and his work.

In an AP News interview with Stella Assange at the Vatican following her private audience with Pope Francis, Stella Assange said, "The meeting with Pope Francis was a very positive experience. He was very warm and welcoming, and he listened attentively to what I had to say about Julian and his work.

She continued, "I am grateful to Pope Francis for taking the time to meet with me, and I believe that his gesture is a sign of support for Julian and for the work of WikiLeaks."
